Sogou was a Beijing-based Chinese internet search company best known for its Sogou search engine and Sogou Pinyin input method, and it became a leader in AI-driven language technologies including speech recognition, machine translation, and virtual anchor synthesis. Its AI Anchor technology, developed with Xinhua News Agency from 2018, produced some of the first lifelike synthetic news presenters, a lineage that preceded Xinhua's 2026 unveiling of physical humanoid anchors built with UBTECH. Sogou was acquired by Tencent in 2021 and delisted from the NYSE, and its AI and voice technology teams were folded into Tencent's broader AI efforts.
